Ward School

IMAGINE MORE – Bring the Ward School back to its historical glory!

History of Batesville Ward School

Original Ward School built in 1870’s on current site. The school housed grades 1 through 12.

In the 1920’s the original structure was replaced by the current building serving primary age students. Some of you may have attended!

The building has been largely underutilized for the last 30 years.

Our Vision

Refurbish the existing structure for incubator retail space maintaining the historical external appearance.

You may ask why invest in such an old, vacant structure?

Restores one of the few buildings left with historical designation preserving memories of many in the community

Aligns with the Downtown Vision Plan for adding more retail in downtown

Enhances key location next to Kids Discovery Factory and Batesville City Hall

Creates pedestrian connectivity to other retail and restaurant locations

Serves as a revenue stream for Batesville Main Street through rental income

Please Take Our Survey & Tell Your Story

Batesville Main Street is embarking on an exciting journey to restore and revitalize the historic Ward School, also known as the East Side Grade School. Over the years, much of the history connected to this beloved building has been lost — and we’re determined to bring it back to life!

As part of this effort, we’re gathering the names of students who once walked the halls of the Ward School. If you, or a family member, attended the school, we’d love for you to share your information by completing the form below.

We’re also collecting photos, stories, and cherished memories to help tell the full story of the Ward School. If you have anything you’d like to share, we’d be honored to include it in this project!

Let’s work together to preserve our past and celebrate the legacy of the Ward School for generations to come.

Any questions, please call Carolyn Dieckmann, Batesville Historical Center at (812) 212-9382.

An enormous thank you to the City of Batesville for donating the building and starting funds to allow Batesville Main Street to embark on this important project.
